OVERVIEW: This grassy looking rosette plant is the only one of its genus that is used in aquariums. It is best in groups of 3 or 4 plants with a bit of water current to show the waving of its slender leaves.
HABITAT: Marshy areas near lakes and streams.
NATIVE RANGE: Southeast Asia.
MAXIMUM HEIGHT: 12inch (30 cm).
LIGHTING: Bright.
WATER: 75-82 F (24-28 C); pH: mildly acidic to neutral; Hardness: moderate.
FEEDING: A rich substrate and the addition of CO2 will maximise growth.
SPECIAL CARE: Use cooler water until the plant accimates.
PROPAGATION: By adventitious plants and shoots as well as rhizome division.
NOTES: This is the perfect aquarium species of the large and diverse genus Cyperus, some of which were used by the Egyptians in the making of papyrus. Most of these plants grown emersed and become quite large. Cyperus helferi is small enough and tender enough to prosper in the aquarium and it remains the perfect aquarium citizen, tidy with a slow growth habit. At maturity the plants send up umbrels of flowers that produce tiny adventitious plantlets, replicas of the parent plant that fall into the substrate where they will root and add density to the planting or that can be planted elsewhere when they have a little size on them.
