Potting Mix Recommend to use a high quality sterilized, well aerated soilless mix consisting of 50-60% peat, and equal parts of vermiculite and perlite.
Lighting Requirements: High light promotes suckering and color. Start light levels at 2000-3000 foot-candles. After 6 weeks, lower to 1500-2000 foot-candles.
Temperature Requirements:Temperature range from 65 degrees F at night to 95 degrees F during the day. Dieffenbachias will show slower growth below 65 degrees F. The best growing temperature is 85-90 degrees F. High temperatures require increased air circulation.
Water Requirements Keep evenly moist, but do not water at night. Avoid overhead watering. Over saturated soil will promote soil born diseases.
Fertilizer Requirements:It is best to constant feed with a 2-1-2 ratio at 200 PPM Nitrogen. If weekly injection is used 400 PPM Nitrogen is recommended. Be sure to rinse foliage after application. Fertilizer should have a higher percentage of nitrate nitrogen than ammoniacal nitrogen.
Common Problems Pests include root aphids, caterpillars, red scale and spider mites. Diseases include bacterial leaf spot, Pseudomonas, Erwinia, and fungal leaf spot, which is usually caused by poor air circulation.
